In Memoriam - Greg Shapton
CLASP is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Greg Shapton, our beloved tutor and board member. Greg served the communities of Pomona and Claremont in many capacities. He started with CLASP as a volunteer tutor and then joined the board in 2013. By 2015 he was CLASP’s vice president of administration, and then was board president from 2016 to 2019. He continued as the board secretary until his death.
Harriett Archibald-Woodward commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed being a tutor and serving on the CLASP board with Greg. He was so dedicated, steady, and reliable. You could count on Greg to get the job done well, whether it was helping a student, leading CLASP, or taking detailed notes, he was one of the best! Greg was my friend and neighbor. He was always a welcoming presence and a wonderful guy. He will be greatly missed.”
Former board president Teddie Warner remembers: “Greg did not blink when I asked him to join the CLASP board after he retired as the director of the Pomona Public Library. He was as well-connected advocate for CLASP with the city of Pomona. I personally was so delighted when he came on the board and worked to secure funding from the City of Pomona. He knew the players and made it work. Just a month or two ago he was helping to plan the next Celebrate CLASP fundraiser. I cannot say enough about Greg and his effect on CLASP, our students, education in Claremont, and our whole community.”
A Celebration of Life for Greg Shapton will be held on Saturday August 22 at 10 AM at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, 830 W. Bonita Ave., Claremont. Refreshments will be served following the service in the parish hall. In keeping with Greg’s commitment to education and service, memorial contributions may be directed to the Claremont Kiwanis Club at: www.claremontkiwanis.org/donate.
