January & February Enrichment
Martin Luther King Day of Service
On MKL Day, 20 CLASP students gathered to learn how to be of service to loved pets. Bella Collazo of Pet Depot in La Verne gave a thorough power-point presentation titled "How to Care for a Happy & Healthy Pet”. She also brought along two foster pets: a very “vocal” cat called Yeager and the calmest Golden Retriever called Bailey. Children had an opportunity to interact with the pets and asked numerous questions of Bella. Then our students made dog chew toys from old t-shirts to donate to Pet Depot for the dogs the shop is fostering. A healthy breakfast was also provided.
Tennis Day
On Monday February 9th when there was no school for CUSD students, 14 CLASP upper graders (4-6 graders) joined a tennis workshop held at the Claremont High School tennis courts. Junior Liad Geldwert assisted by Junior Vaayu Reddy, members of Smashing Barriers, provided rackets and led our students in various exercises to develop their tennis skills and knowledge of the game. "Smashing Barriers is a non-profit committed to giving underserved youth both access to tennis and the tools to support their mental well being". A healthy breakfast was provided and Liad rewarded our students' efforts with cupcakes at the end of the 90 minute workshop. The goal was to provide an outdoor recreational activity for our students.
