October Program Director’s Message
I heard a new expression while I was at one of the elementary schools – “Covid Kindergartner.” It was a sobering revelation that our current fourth graders were kindergartners when the world, and particularly schools were shuttered and forced to exist virtually. Thinking about my own kindergarten experience with Mrs. Cotter back in 1971 made me realize that she, along with my parents, were whole heartedly responsible for my loving school. Sure, Mrs. Cotter taught me foundational skills which led to reading and writing and numbers, but more importantly, she fostered my love of learning and gave her students an environment to interact and grow with other 5-year-olds. It was a world of wonder and imagination. She never missed an opportunity to praise and give hugs. She was mistakenly called “Mom” by her students and lovingly corrected us.
How do we now give that love of learning back to our current 4th graders so that they can continue to grow and thrive? We, as a community, are tasked with instilling the love of learning, not just to our 4th graders, but all of our students. The children we serve are part of a world that is changing so quickly, yet fundamentally, curiosity, joy, and wonder are the constants that need to be nurtured.
Our actions with them must be intentional. A high five, a fist bump, a simple smile, or an atta-boy or girl will never be replaced by a computer-generated accolade. That’s our human touch and one that I am so happy and proud, of which to be a part.
